SMOOTH Cities

The SMOOTH cities are four namely, Cahors (France), Kaunas (Lithuania), Nicosia (Cyprus) and Vallons de Vilaine (France).

All SMOOTH territories incorporate in their medium and long-term land-use planning strategy the best approaches and practices in terms of linking transport development and urban development. The local projects will particularly target completion of the public transport offer and enable inter-modality for answering all needs. Accompanying measures, such as incentives in Kaunas, small services and promotion of the Park & Ride in Cahors, cycle parks in Vallons de Vilaine and global information and promotion campaign in all sites, will complement the implementations for tangible results. In Cyprus, the Ministry of Communications and Works, in charge of transport planning, will assess the need for a demand-responsive transport system covering all people categories; SMOOTH will enable an advanced study, getting the best lessons from the French territories, and implement experiments for designing a future wide implementation.

As a contribution to the objectives set out in the Green Paper, all sites will follow an integrated approach in the project implementation:

  • encouragement to use the existing public transport services
  • enhancing link facilities
  • mobility management
  • consultation of inhabitants and stakeholders
  • support to private initiatives such as car-pooling
  • engaging stakeholders and citizens in environmental impact assessment
